Where a member's garden backs onto the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), express permission must be sought and received from Natural England for any work which would involve the removal of vegetation from the site. Where a member's garden does not back onto the SSSI and where gorse grows up to the boundaries of properties, members themselves may cut the gorse back to a depth of 3 metres from their boundary. Note that MHHL has been advised that officially recommended firebreak widths relate to the distance between the hazard and the dwelling. Therefore, a back garden is considered to form part or all of a firebreak. If the garden depth is not sufficient to provide an appropriate overall firebreak depth, a member should seek an exemption from the 3 metre rule. Members are responsible for the removal and disposal of the vegetation and the ongoing maintenance of the firebreak. For more information on Sites of Special Scientific Interest please consult the Natural England website. |
